International Tabletop Day is almost upon us and LXG have organised an event to run on the day, in conjunction with our good friends at Grill’d Burger Camp Hill.

Come along to Grill’d Burger at Camp Hill between 1pm and 5pm on Saturday 30 March to play. Bring your favourite games or simply turn up as there will be plenty of games available to join in.

And if you want to fill in a Game of Games sheet or two you’re welcome to do so!

A Game of Games at Grill’d Burger

As the Tuesday games evenings at Grill’d Burger become a regular event, we have decided to make all games you play there eligible for Game of Games points. Just remember to bring some spare scoresheets along with you (there is a handy image on this website too!).

Epic Diem – Sunshine Coast September 2013

2013 is going to be a good year for Nerd Conventions! With CanCon past, there is PAX and now Epic Diem to look forward to!

Epic Diem will take place at the USC Sports Stadium on Queensland’s Sunshine Coat on Sunday 21 September. Eagle-eyed readers will not that this clashes with LXG’s September club meeting, but we won’t hold that against them!

It is great to see a new convention appear, especially in Queensland, as we have had a long wait for a quality convention to come around. Epic Diem looks to be focused around role-playing and LARPing, but with plenty of other events added in. It bills itself as a nerd culture expo. Confirmed so far are:

TABLETOP ROLE-PLAYING MINI CAMPAIGNS
MAGIC THE GATHERING TOURNAMENTS
YU-GI-OH TOURNAMENTS
COMICS
COSPLAY RUNWAY SHOW AND COMPETITION
BATTLESPORTS
BOFFER BATTLES
MONSTER MAKER SEMINAR
FACE PAINTING

There will be further announcements of events and also of vendors as we get closer to the event. You can keep updated on their website or Facebook page. If you find out what a Boffer Battle is, let me know!

If you aren’t able to make our September club meeting, why not drive up to the Sunshine Coast and check it out!

Grill’d Burger Games Night

Grill’d Burger Game Night
A group of a dozen members enjoyed the hospitality of the people the Grill’d Camp Hill after January’s meeting. They must have enjoyed our company too, as they would like to have a monthly boards game evening, on the first Tuesday of each month.

The first LXG games night at Grill’d Burger Camp Hill gets underway on Tuesday 5th February 2013 from 6pm. Join other club members for dinner and a game and help promote the club to other patrons of Grill’d. The location is at Samuel Street Shopping Centre, Corner of Samuel Street and Boundary Road, Camp Hill. Bring your favourite game and see you there!

CanCon 2013 Report

I must start with an apology – I didn’t take a single photo! Luckily the Combat Company have almost 300 on their Facebook page, so check them out!

With that out of the way, here is a report from a LXG perspective:

Vendors
The vendors at CanCon had a wide variety of different board games and miniatures lines. There was one vendor specialising in dice, another in crafted leather goods, mostly fantasy, some vaguely steampunk. The vendors overall were excellent offering a fantastic range. It was like having a dozen websites in front of you at once, and without the tedious need to register your details every time you want to buy something. There were a few miniatures I have only seen on the web, never in a store, so that was nice. Even with Mil Sims choosing not to attend this year, there was a good range of board games, and something for every taste.

Games
The core of CanCon are the miniatures tournaments that take place, and this was well in evidence. The main hall must have had 300-400 gamers playing Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000 and Flames of War. The second hall hosted War Machine and Bolt Action. There were also smaller events on for historical games including SAGA, and also Malifaux and Infinity. Plenty of breadth. In addition to the miniatures, a large room in between the two halls was used to play Magic: The Gathering. This included pre-release events for the new Gatecrash set, and a Pro-Tour Qualifier event held on Monday.

Board Games
But what, you may ask in your LXG voice, of board games? If there was one thing noticeable missing, it was any kind of board game event. There were tables where you could try games from some of the vendors, and a table to try out Dreadball, but no organised events. There was a family enclosure where you could borrow board games (sound familiar?) to play within the enclosure. There was a good range of board game available, 100 or so different games, suitable for all ages. Games were signed out using a barcode and scanner system, similar to what we will shortly have for LXG. There was a charge of $10 per day to use a table for as long as you wished. The enclosure was one of the few places where you could stop and sit down, and it was soon fully occupied.

Overall
This was my second visit to CanCon, and once again it was a great event. An organised board game event or two would have been welcome. The entry fee of $0 was also welcome, and this made the event attractive both to gamers and to people wanting to visit the vendors or simply come and see what all the fuss was about.

he categories used to determine the overall placings will be:

The methods used to score each of these categories are addressed in detail below.

PRIZE CATEGORIES
Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:
• Legend of Legends – Character (chosen by player) performs the best. Details below.

Other prize levels to be determined based on turnout. Each player will be eligible for a single prize only. Tie breakers will be used if needed. And any player who wins more than one prize will receive the bigger of the two prizes.

REQUIREMENTS
Armies must be drawn from the latest Games Workshop published WFB Army Books. Armies should be of 2500 points or less. With one special/named character allowed per army.

Remember the percentages when designing your army. Max 25% lords, Max 25% heroes, Min 25% core, Max 50% special, Max 25% rare.

Army lists will be “closed” for this tournament. What that means is that magic items and banners need not be disclosed at the start of a game but instead referred to as magical stuff. So when you deploy a unit that has a war banner you say “unit of …. with magical standard” similarly when you deploy your characters you say “lord with magic sword, armour and enchanted item”. The idea with this system is to hint at what magic items are in an army without telling exactly what they are. Adds a bit of surprise to each game.

NOTE: you must still explain what each unit is and what mundane items they have. You cant deploy a unit that looks like free company but when they get into combat tell your opponent that they are greatswords!
Army lists must be submitted by the 12th of Feb 2012 at the latest.

All lists will be checked by the TO for accuracy Army lists can be submitted via email to the Tournament Organizer at eddiecromptonATgmailDOTcom You can also pm me the lists. (note plain text lists only please)
Players are requested to bring their own pen/pencil, tape or other measuring device, sufficient dice, deodorant, a legible copy of their army list, and copies of the reference materials used to design the army list (eg. WFB Rulebook, WFB Army book etc).

GAMES
Games will consist of 6 turns, or as many as can be completed within 2hrs 45mins. The timings for games will be strictly adhered to. Players will be given 30 minute and 10 minute “warnings” prior to the end of the game. At the 10 minute point, if players are not finished their game already, they are to finish the turn they are on, and end the game at that point. This is needed to allow the TO to process the results and get the next round underway asap.

Scenarios will be drawn from those in the rulebook with the exception of the “battle of the pass” and “watchtower” which will be combined in to a special mission.
Round 1: Battle Line (as rule book)
Round 2: Meeting Engagement (as rule book)
Round 3: “Tower of the Pass” (uses deployment rules and the bottle neck rule from battle for the pass but
uses the win condition from watchtower and lasts 6 turns not a random number)
Round 4: Dawn Attack (as rule book)
Round 5: Blood and Glory (as per rule book but breaking enemy does not end game)
The tower and blood and glory scenarios award and automatic win condition. Play these games as normal but instead of an auto win award 2 bonus battle points for that round.

THE DRAW
The “Swiss Chess” system to determine the draw. The first round will be drawn randomly, from the second round onwards the draw will be seeded (i.e. you will be paired with an opponent who is on a comparable battle score). Under no circumstances will you play the same player more than once.

THE GAMES
After each game, tally up victory points as normal for a pitched battle scenario (units destroyed, table quarters, captured standards, etc). Also work out how many models you have in your army. Monster riders and war machines count as one. If you have lost half or more your opponent is entitled to 4 bonus battle points. This is called a massacre. Determine the number of battle points you score by comparing the margin of victory against the following table:

Victory Point Margin Battle Points
Difference – Win/Loss
0-350 – 10/10
351-700 – 11/9
701-1050 – 12/8
1051-1400 – 13/7
1401-1750 – 14/6
1751-2100 – 15/5
2101+ – 16/4

You will be given a results card to fill for each round of the Tournament. Please note that it is the battle points from the table above you need to record here, not the victory point margin. Please ensure that the card is filled out correctly and that both players have agreed to the results and then bring it to the organizer’s desk.

SPORTSMANSHIP
Sportsmanship will go to the player who score the highest using a per based system. At the end of each game you will be asked to score your opponent against the following criteria:
• A good game. I look forward to playing this person again. 4 points
• I had fun in this game. But there was nothing outstanding about it. 3 points
• I didn’t really enjoy this game, and would think twice before playing this person again. 2 points
• This person cared about the win, but not about the game. An unenjoyable experience. 1 points

At the end of the tourney you will be required to give one of your opponents a +1 for outstanding conduct in their game.

Players will therefore receive a total of between 5 (for being given 1 point by all of your opponents) to 25 sportsmanship points (four points each from all your opponents and 5 +1′s). At the end of the event you will be asked to nominate from the opponents you faced, one player who stood above all the others when it came to Sporting behaviour. Each player that is nominated will receive an extra point, with 5 possible points available.

PAINTING POINTS:
Up to 25 points. You will receive 1 point per 1/5th of your army painted per round over 5 rounds. So if you have 100 models in your army and 60 are painted. You will get 3 points per round equaling 15 points for painting. If you want to bring the brushes and paint in between rounds to increase this score you are more than welcome!

There will also be a beauty pageant on day 2 where players will set up their army’s with a name tag. And then go around to vote on the other armies, in order of 1st best, 2nd and 3rd. The highest score from votes will win. This must be a player that was awarded 25 out of 25 in the above criteria.
Players who did not paint their own army are not eligible to set up their army for votes in the beauty pageant.

LEGEND OF LEGENDS:
Each player will be required to select one of their army characters to compete in this award. Keep track of any unsaved wounds that he, his mount, any spells he casts and any wounds from missile weapons he uses.
The character that inflicts the most unsaved wounds over the 5 rounds will win the “Legend of Legends” award and all the bragging rights that go with it.

TIE BREAKERS:
In the event that two players are tied in scores for a particular award category the following order is used to determine a winner. Overall score, Battle points, Sports points.

Converplaytion Tonight

The Converplayion at The Edge is on tonight, featuring LXG speaker David K talking about the past, present and future of board games. The session goes from 5.45 – 7.30 including some time for playing board games at the end. Club copies of Settlers of Catan, Dominion, and Ticket to Ride are available.

If you’d like to come there is still time to register!

Winter Retreat 2013

Here’s the news you have been waiting for – Winter Retreat is on for 2013!

Winter Retreat is our annual gaming getaway. In the dead of winter, we up sticks and go somewhere and play board games for a solid week-end. We bring about half the club library, plus members bring their own games so there is always something new to play. It’s lots of fun for members and non-members alike. Here are some images from 2012.

Over the past four years we have stayed at Leslie Dam, Warwick. With that facility’s recent closure we have had to search around for an alternative.

This year’s Winter Retreat will be held on the Sunshine Coast, at the Currimundi Recreation Centre. Located at 80 Currimundi Road, this is a closer venue to Brisbane than we have been to in the past, I leave it to you to decide whether this is a bad thing!

Dates: Winter Retreat will be held June 28-30 (this is a Friday, Saturday, Sunday).

Cost: $140 adults, under 12s $125

Places: We have more places this year, with 72 places available. This is a big increase on the 50 places we had last year (which filled quickly). You can secure your place with a $20 deposit, as we are expecting a full house even with the extra beds. The 72 beds are divided into 9 huts each with 8 beds.

The venue within Currimundi is the Acacia Centre. This is a self-contained centre within the facility so we won’t disturb or be disturbed by any other groups staying at the time, and we will have our own playing/dining area.

Winter Retreat Venue Search

The committee has learned that sadly our winter retreat venue of the past few years has been closed down as part of the cutbacks going on in the Queensland Government right now.

The committee has already begun searching for a new venue, considering locations around SEQ including Camp Moogerah (roughly halfway between Brisbane and Warwick) and Currimundi on the Sunshine Coast (one of three remaining camps adminstered by the state government).

The committee will continue searching for a suitable venue, ensuring that we have a facilities we need at a price that is reasonable. Any suggestions for a new venue will be welcome. The committee expect to announce Winter Retreat details in January 2013.

Victoria Point Games Demo Report

ANGUS and ROBERTSON GAMES DEMO

In July 2012, LXG was contacted by David Peard, of Even Toys and Games, a local distributor of board games in Australia. Even Toys and Games main product range is educational games and recently they introduced their product lines into Angus and Roberson Book stores. LXG has an existing relationship with David Peard after Keith Done worked was asked to demo “Viewpoint “ at the Even Toys and Games stand at the Melbourne Toy and Hobby Expo, held earlier in 2012. David expressed interest in LXG running demonstrations of some of the games that A&R were stocking at their Victoria Point Store. Of course, LXG was happy to oblige.

David provided LXG with copies of Sherlock, Yikerz, Catch the Match, Sitting Ducks Gallery, Army v Aliens and its companion game, Pirates v Ninjas. The LXG volunteer group for the weekend made themselves familiar with the games in the week that preceded the demo, which was being held at the Victoria Point Shopping Centre on August 11th. Helping out on the day was Vanessa Tierney, Andrew Betts, Nigel Bell, Alex Done and Keith Done.

The team assembled at 9.30am and met the manager of the A&R. Three tables had been set up outside the store in the centre of the mall as part of an Ekka themed day being run at the centre. The expectation from A&R was that we may get one or two interested people; the other attractions of the day included acrobats and free fairy floss, which were hard acts to compete with! However, within half an hour of setting up a few games, family groups started drifting in and the LXG volunteers had our hands full all day. The agreed time that we would be there was from 10.00am to 1.00pm., however interest in games was so great that the group didn’t finish up until 2.30pm.

Yikerz (the magnetic stone game) was a constant hit and Nigel Bell had great fun showing it to kids and adults alike. Sitting Ducks was also held the attention of families who were happy to play through an entire game (which is surprising, considering it was the longest of the games to run – usually people are too busy for anything over 10 minutes at a demo). All the other games got a run too and passers-by took the time to learn about them and A&R did a brisk trade selling games to many of those people who talked to the LXG volunteers. In addition, we took some time to ‘sell‘ the club to interested people and this has translated to one new member already.

A&R are interested in more demos at Victoria Point and at their Ipswich store and Even Toys and Games will be in touch in the next few months regarding dates. The games played have been kindly donated to the LXG library. Here’s a mini-review of each of them;

Sherlock
This is a memory game where you arrange a circle of eight cards with bright images. You get to look at them and then turn them face down. The game system determines which card is selected on your turn to guess. Collect six cards and you win. Good game for kids aged 6-10. If you like Chicken Cha-Cha-Cha, you’ll like this.

Yikerz
This game was a big hit at the Melbourne Toy and Hobby Expo. Each player has ten highly magnetic stones that they must place (one by one) onto a small playing area. If you get all your stones down you win. If any stones fly together or are repulsed off the board by the magnetic fields, they go into your hand. It’s a very simple game but highly addictive and a lot of fun for all ages.

Catch the Match
A game that features cards with heaps of symbols, all detailed with bright base colours. Each card has the same symbols but only two of the symbols are ever coloured the same. Each turn, two cards are flipped and players examine them to be the first to call out the symbol with matching colours. If you like “Pictureka”, you’ll like this one.

Army vs Aliens
A dice based game for two players – one has a set of Army Dice and the other a set of Alien dice. Each has its own shaker with the basic rules and scoring system printed on the shaker. You dice sets have four sides with units of increasing ranks and each set features two unique powers in the form of a leader and a special ability. On your turn you eliminate the opponent’s dice according to matching ranks and try to gain an advantage by dice combos and using your special ability. The expansion set, “Pirates v Ninjas” adds more factions to the mix and you can use any of the dice sets against any others in the range.

Sitting Ducks
Already an old favourite of LXG. You own five ducks of a specific colour that are shuffled together with all the other players’ ducks and five cards featuring an empty pond. This is the Duck Deck. Six ‘Sky’ cards are placed in a line representing the spaces of the pond. You start by dealing six cards from the Duck Deck in a row under the ‘Sky’ cards. Each player is dealt a hand of cards that allows them to move the line of ducks, target ducks and shoot ducks. Lose all your ducks and you are out of the game. Note, the set LXG has inherited from Even Toys and Games is a new edition and features a few new cards (e.g. Resurrection – which allows someone who gets eliminated early to get one duck back in the pond).
