A Game of Games April 2013

It was a busy month of playing games and renewing memberships, or joining for the first time. With so much activity it’s not surprising that a number of people gained a new rank this month. Leader of the pack Eddie has knocked over another rank reaching Archduke. Twelve other members also gained ranks.

Adrian R and Alex D are Princes
John M is now a Marquis
Terry K and Graham M are Viscounts
Sean H is now a Baronet

A Game of Games at Grill’d Burger

As the Tuesday games evenings at Grill’d Burger become a regular event, we have decided to make all games you play there eligible for Game of Games points. Just remember to bring some spare scoresheets along with you (there is a handy image on this website too!).

Any scoresheets from Grill’d burger can be dropped off at the following club meeting, and added along with scores from that club day.

A Game of Games March 2013

It was a very busy meeting on a day that just got hotter. Our thanks go to all club members who helped to move the tables and tabletops as requested, your efforts are very much appreciated.

Eight players gained ranks today in A Game of Games, these were:

Anthony H is now a Count, Angela C is a Countess
Steve M is now a Baron
Mark W is a Baronet
Martin I is a Knight
Steve T, Alexis A, and Leigh R are all Esquires

We also have a few new members who have just started gaining points, so there are new Novices on the board too!

The LXG club year is coming to a close, and memberships will need to be renewed at the April meeting. Before that it’s time to look back at the last 12 months, especially in terms of popular games. One advantage of running the Game of Games system is that we can see which games are especially popular to play on club days. Below are the 30 most popular games of the past 12 months, as recorded by Game of Games results sheets.

How to Play A Game of Games

A Game of Games was introduced in October 2011, but LXG has many members who weren’t around at that meeting, so it’s high time for a recap on how to join in our ranks ladder.

The system is based around playing games (could you guess?) but it’s also there to encourage club members to get to know one another and play a variety of games at club meetings. You gain points by playing at club meetings and at Winter Retreat.

A Game of Games has been deliberately designed to be a multi-year exercise. While we ultimately want to spice things up with some achievements within the ranks, right now it’s points only. Ranks require progressively more points to gain as you rise through the ranks, but it starts off fairly easy. The first rank requires 20 points to achieve, which can easily be gained at a single meeting if you’re constantly playing. The next requires 30, and the five ranks after that are spaced 50 points apart. Only then does it become a longer stretch between ranks.

Gaining points is as easy as playing games, and playing games is what LXG is all about. It’s impossible to lose points once you’ve gained them, and while winning gives more points, the ladder is ultimately a measure of gaming activity rather than gaming wins. Event organisers and league organisers are also eligible for bonus points, based on the games they run and the number of players in those events. The current top three players on our ladder all run events and/or leagues.

When playing, to ensure your score is recorded, make sure there is a record sheet at the table. Each game requires one sheet, and they look like this:

gamerecordsheet

The sheets should be filled in with each player’s name and where they came in the game (1st, 2nd, etc). I you can. Don’t forget to write the name of the game you played! A game’s modifier can be worked out form the side of the box; games that have a play time of up to 1 hour have a modifier of 1, up to 2 hours is a modifier of 2, and so on. Always use the highest number on the box to determine modifier, so if a game has a stated playing time of 1-2 hours, it will have a modifier of 2, even if your game finished in 40 minutes!

Also remember to add at least the first two letters of each player’s surname on the sheet, as this can prevent confusion when it comes time to add the scores. We have a number of members named Alex, for example. There is a column for membership numbers and when the committee finds a cost-effective way of issuing membership cards, that will come in handy, until then it can be left blank.

Once your game is over and you’ve filled out the score sheet, you can drop the sheet at the counter, where there is usually a basket to place the day’s sheets in.

After the club meeting, all the scores are added together and the ladder is updated, this usually happens on the evening of the club meet, so you don’t have to wait long to discover if you’ve gained a rank or not.

Rank badges are available at every LXG meeting if you’d like to show off your rank. The badges cost $2.50 each, with $1 covering the cost of the badge and the remaining $1.50 making up a donation to multiple sclerosis Queensland, a charity that LXG has been associated with for some years now.

Happy playing!

A Game of Games February 2013

Summer Legends was a big month for gaining ranks in A Game of Games. Eleven members gained ranks today, although three of these gained ranks simply by joining LXG and having their points recorded over the week-end. When you join LXG any points you gained the month before joining (if applicable) are added to your score, in addition to any points you get at Winter Retreat.

If you were playing in any of the board game tournaments over the week-end, your points have not yet been added in. Keith will be totalling up what everyone gained by going back over the round by round results. Keith will also be getting his organiser points after that! For running a 16-player Warhammer Fantasy Battles event, Eddie C gained 64 points – not enough to move him up a rank though!

Ranks gained today are:
John M is now a Count
Liam P and Andrew B are Viscounts
Aris T and Darren C are Barons
Franck F and Courtney T are now Knights
Sean H, Peter H, Garth P, and Liam H-F are Esquires

More ranks will doubtless be gained once the board game tournament scores are in.

A Game of Games December 2012

The Christmas meeting was incredibly busy with a very full hall, filled with very full gamers after the massive lunch everybody brought, plus the addition of pizzas. You will be pleased to know that we were up to the challenge and very little food was left over at the end!

There were a couple of special events, the LXG Christmas Trivia, and the Grand Melee and Thunderstone league finals, that boosted people’s points quite significantly. Outside of that the sheer volume of games being played meant there are more ranks gained in December than in any month so far!

(see the full rankings)

Ranks Gained:
David K is now an Elector, joining Eddie C at the highest rank gained so far, thanks to his league organiser points for running the grand melee league.
Keith D is now a Prince, with his league organiser points from the Viewpoint league yet to be added to his score. Running the trivia event netted Keith a cool 100 points, and they were well deserved given the amount of work Keith put into making this event run smoothly!
Jeremy N is now a Marquis, with his points for running the Thunderstone league yet to be added too.
Ross vS is now a Count, the only one of that rank at present.
Anthony H is now a Viscount
Three new Barons today are Nigel B, Andrew B, and Liam P; also Vanessa T is a Baroness
Tim H, Andrew W, and Edward E are all Baronets, with Grace C a Baronetess
Two new knights; Luke I and Luis C
A whopping five new Esquires as Jason A, Veronica A, David B, Rory W and Lauren W move up past novice rank.

Well to to everyone, have a happy and safe Christmas and New Year’s. We hope to see you at our first meeting of 2013 on 20 January.

Games of Games update November 2012

Fourteen club members gained at rank today, at a very well attended club meeting. Dozens of members and guests braved the early summer storms to play some games! In fact the weather was rather convenient, with the shy clear as members arrived, two separate downpours during the day, and then clear skies as we all departed!

Adrian R is now a Duke
David M is now a Marquis
Lance A is a Viscount
Terry K, Angela C and Andrew B all reached Baron/Baroness rank
Vanessa T, Liam P, and Mal O all reached Baronet/Baronetess
Megan L, Neil H and Ashton S reached Knight/Lady rank
Franck F and Greg P reached Esquire

Congratulations to all!

We also had three previous members rejoin today, thus reactivating their old scores (and adding today’s games to that score). If you do leave the club and rejoin later, your old points will be waiting for you, you can’t lose them!

You can see the full current standings at the Game of Games page.

A Game of Games October 2012

Eighteen club members went up a rank out of today’s meeting. Eightneen. Well done guys!

Current ladder leader Eddie C knocked over another rank, reaching Elector. There is now well over one hundred points and the Prince/Princess rank between Eddie and his closest rival. Today’s update also includes points won at last month’s Viewpoint games.

Other advances from today’s meeting are:
Leanne J is now a Duchess
Megan B is now a Marchioness
Jeremy N is a Count
Graham M, Anthony H, Sam M, and Luke vS are now Barons
Steve M and Oliver C are now Baronets
Eddie E, Mark W, Alex Su, and Phil Su are now Knights
Neil H, Ashton S, Luke I, and Tony F have all reached Esquire rank.

There are so many ranks gained this time, here are the images for each of the eight different ranks attained in October. Full standings including individual points are available on the Game of Games page.

One Year of A Game of Games

It was October 2011 when we first launched A Game of Games, our system of awarding points for games played to our members. In that year the highest rank gained so far is Prince, requiring a massive 500 points over the year (well done Eddie C!). A Game of Games is designed to be a multi-year system, so points carry over.

For members who leave for a year (or more) and come back, your points will still be there, even if your name no longer appears on the standings which only show the scores of current members. Points gained at Winter Retreat are also recorded, for members and no-members alike. Joining LXG after taking part in a Winter Retreat tends to give you an initial points boost!

There were 142 different games were played at LXG meetings in this first 12 months. To put that in perspective that’s less then half the number of games in our games library! This count does not include games that members borrow to play at home though. In all, 557 separate games took place at LXG meetings and at Winter Retreat – and those are just the ones that handed in Game of Games score sheets. We are a busy bunch!

The single most popular game, in terms of the number of times the game was played, was Magic: the Gathering. Between dual games, pack wars and the Grand Melee League, this card game gets a lot of attention.

Other frequently played games include dice, card, board and miniatures games. These are: Quarriors, Connect 4, Thunderstone, Dominion, Memoir 44, Settlers of Catan, Puerto Rico, Deadwood, and the miniatures game War Machine. Ticket to Ride also got a fair amount of play across all the expansions and variants in the club library. 7 Wonders and Viewpoint were also popular.

The most active players (those who played the most games) were: David K, Eddie C, Adrian R, Leanne J, Jeremy N, Courtney J, Ross vS, Alex D, Megan B, and Luke vS.

David K won the most games, followed by Adrian R, Alex D, Eddie C, Ross vS, Leanne J, Jeremy N, Daniel McG, Anna S and Megan B.

A Game of Games Update September 2012

There was a busy club day today, and so there were a few game of games results sheets handed in. There were fewer sheets than usual today, mainly because people were playing fewer, longer games this month.

Six club members gained a rank today:
Courtney J is now a Marchioness
John M is now a Viscount
Lance A is now a Baron
Andrew B is a Baronet
Kathleen B and Alex Su reached Esquire rank

Well done to all! There are currently a few games sheets still to be handed in, namely the Viewpoint league results and the late game of Settlers of Catan.

Full list of rankings can be seen on the Game of Games page. Remember, you must be a current club members to gain points.

The current ladder leader, Eddie C, is just four points away from reaching Elector level!

A Games of Games, August 2012 Update

With two full days of gaming over Winter Retreat, lots of points were gained in A Game of Games. This month, eleven club members gained a rank, and yet another rank fell to the ladder leader Eddie C! All hail Prince Eddie!

In addition to Eddie gaining the rank of Prince, other members gained ranks as shown:

David K is now a Duke
Keith D and Alex D are now at Marquis rank
David M and Megan B are now a Count and Countess
Ross vS is now a Viscount
Anna S is now a Baroness
Tom B is a Knight
Mark W is an Esquire, at his first LXG meeting! Anthony R is also an Esquire

Well done everyone!

A Game of Games, July 2012 Update

The scores have now been updated with the last new sheets from Winter Retreat, plus all of the July meeting results, including the Twilight Imperium game that lasted for the whole club meeting, plus the Viewpoint and Midgard games.

Twelve club members gained a rank at this meeting (or through Winter Retreat points).

Courtney J is now a Countess
David M, Jeremy N and Jason C are now at the rank of Viscount
John M, Ross vS, and Alex Sp are now Barons
Angela C is a Baronetess and Luke vS is a Baronet
Callum McK, Kaden C and Phil S are now Esquires

Congratulations to all, especially Phil S who gained the rank of Esquire at his first LXG meeting! See all rankings at the Game of Games page.
