Planeswalkers in Grand Melee, part 26: Garruk Relentless

One of the most noticeable features of the Innistrad set was its introduction of double-faced cards. This was used primarily to represent some unfortunates who would transform into werewolves from time to time. Garruk Relentless has a worse affliction than this. After being contaminated by Liliana’s veil, he is being transformed from a green planeswalker into a black one.

On the card this is shown by a transformation trigger that occurs when his loyalty reaches a certain point. You then flip the card over to reveal Garruk the Veil-Cursed, a black/green planeswalker with a different set of abilities.

But first to Garruk Relentless. A a double-faced card you can only cast this side. He costs four mana to cast, one of which must be green, and enters the battlefield with three loyalty counters, and has two abilities.

Each of these abilities cost 0 to activate, and he transforms only if his loyalty reaches two or fewer.

The first of his abilities will help you do this. Garruk Relentless deals 3 damage to a creature, and that creature deals damage to Garruk Relentless equal to its power. As damage dealt to a planeswalker causes that many loyalty counters to be removed, even a power 1 creature can cause Garruk Relentless to flip.

You might not want him to flip right away, as the second ability puts a 2/2 green wolf into play. You may wish to build up your 2/2 wolf count before Garruk Relentless transforms into Garruk the Veil-Cursed.

Or maybe you do! Garruk the Veil-Cursed has three abilities. His +1 ability puts a 1/1 black wlf with deathtouch into play. This token will be more useful than the bigger wolves of Garruk Relentless if you need to defend, less so if you want to attack.

The -1 ability lets you sacrifice a creature, and if you do, you may search your library for a creature card and put that card into your hand. This is a great way to get the creature you need for whatever the current situation at the table is.

Garruk the Veil-Cursed’s final ability costs three loyalty. So if you want to use this one, you’ll have to so spend a turn or two bringing 1/1 wolves into play. With this ability your creatures get trample and +x/+x where x is the number of creature cards in your graveyard. Potentially this ability will kill an opponent.

Verdict: Strong. Garruk Relentless is a versatile planeswalker who can aid quite a few decks. With five abilities between his two sides, you are going to have some uses for him.

Hobby Games ‘Explode’!

Another update on Hobby game sales over at ICV2. It seems they are running out of superlatives. In spire of any overriding economic conditions, sales volumes of hobby games rise and rise. In 2011 sales were up by 20-25% and apparently this year is on track to match or exceed that growth.

In my opinion, this is a case of quality selling well, and reports show not just more sales through existing stores, but additional stores opening up. Also mentioned is increasing media coverage, something that LXGs two recent radio appearances must be a part of!

ICV2 provide a breakdown across different areas. Magic:The Gathering rules the collectible space. Munchkin is the top card/deckbuilding game, over club favourite Dominion. Other club favourites in the top 10 are 7 Wonders (4), Quarriors (6), and Thunderstone (9).

Board games was a little more predictable with Settlers of Catan top, followed by Ticket to Ride and Small World.

You can check out this and more at the ICV2 site. Their figures are best on sales through US distributors into the hobby channel there, but provide a good overall indicator of where the market is heading.

Board Game From Idea to Reality

The Penny Arcade Report has an article that will be of interest to all budding game designers. This one covers the genesis of the board game Crows, from initial design and playtesting, through to production and finished product.

From the article: “I’ve prototyped dozens of board and card games over the years. It’s a really interesting and exciting process, but it can also be filled with the pain and heartbreak of unrealized ideas. That’s part of game design: Everything you get excited about won’t necessarily make a great game. The challenge of prototyping and design is to flesh out your idea and see if you can actually make it fun.

I would guess about 25% to 33% of my prototypes end up being fun. I think that’s a pretty good batting average, and most of my professional designer friends have similar results.”

Viewpoint League

VIEWPOINT LEAGUE

Since we have had a dramatic increase in membership, I thought I had better let our new gaming friends know about the LXG Viewpoint League. Viewpoint is an Australian designed card game that was released about 3 years ago. It’s quick and simple to learn but deceptively strategic to play. You can learn all more the game on the web-site at 93 Made Games.

LXG is sanctioned by 93 Made Games to run a monthly Viewpoint league and an annual Queensland State Championship. The league runs at 12.30pm at each club meeting and points earned by playing the game go toward a national leader-board on the 93 made Games site and toward a framed certificate awarded to the winner of the LXG league at our Christmas meeting. The current national rankings of LXG club members are detailed below.

If you want to learn to play and join in the league games, see Keith Done at the next meeting. The winner of each league game receives a $50 Myer Voucher and there are ‘lucky door prizes’ consisting of great Viewpoint merchandise (T-shirts, caps, mugs and much more). Each winner also joins the coveted ranks of the Viewpoint league winners and is awarded a Viewpoint Champion Badge.

2013 League
The latest exciting news is that, in 2013, the national Viewpoint league will be a 3 team format, with the score needed to win a game being 200 (ie a combined score totalling 200 between all 3 team members). I trialled this at the two previous National Finals in the “State of Origin” challenges and it works very well and gives the game a whole new dimension.

LXG will feature a 3v3 game at Legends

Grand Melee: Top 8 Cube Draft

The august round of the grand melee leagues sees the top 8 cube draft.

What is it? The cube consists of 360 pre-chosen and pre-sleeved cards. These cards are divided into 24 15-card draft ‘packs’. Each player receives three of these for the draft. Basic land (pre-sleeved) will also be provided.

What cards? The list of cards in the cube will be posted on this website.

How it works: Seating at the table will be random. Drafting and deck building will take place where you sit. After this, seating will be randomised again and a melee will be played using the decks everyone has drafted and built.

Who is in? The current top 8 in the league standings are all pre-chosen for entry in the draft. If you are in the top 8 you must draft this round. If not all the top 8 show up, places will be offered to those in 9th to 12th place. If you are offered it is your choice to join the draft or play normally. If less than 6 players are in the draft, it will be cancelled and a normal round will be played instead.

Note the melee draft will behin at 2.00pm so make sure you show up before then.

Cost: entry is one magic booster as per any other grand melee league round.
