Website Annual Report

The LXG website had a very good year to June 30, with monthly hits rising 500% year on year. This has been driven by more engagement with our members – having useful content here that you all want to come and read is good! Useful things like the About page showing our meeting dates, the games library and of course game of games standings all bring people here.

The second thing is the articles, and this year we have had a great response to the articles we’ve put up here. From game reviews, event reports, and club-based articles such as league updates, the response has been very positive, and we hope to build on this success in the next year.

Below are the top 50 articles by hits from 1 July, 2011 to 30 June, 2012. You may see some of your favourite hits, or else see something that you missed to click on!

Planeswalkers in Grand Melee, part 21: Karn Liberated

Karn Liberated is a colourless planeswalker. What does this mean? Principally it means any Magic deck that wants to can run him. There are a lot of reasons to want to run this extremely powerful planeswalker too.

Created as a golem servant, Karn has since become a planeswalker and a creator in his own right. The metal plane of Mirrodin was Karn’s work, and during its takeover by the Phyrexians, Karn was held captive. Freed by fellow planeswalkers, Karn’s task is now to somehow restore his creation to its prior state.

Karn Liberated costs seven mana to cast. There are no colour restrictions, so any mana will do. He enters the battlefield with six loyalty counters and has three abilities. The first two abilities work around exiling cards and permanents, while the last provides for not so much a big finish as a big beginning.

The first ability adds four loyalty counters to Karn Liberated. For this price, you may have target player exile a card from his or her hand. You may target yourself with this ability, and there are plenty of reasons why you may want to. Otherwise, getting rid of that last card an opponent is holding is nice too.

The second ability costs three loyalty counters. This ability allows you to exile a target permanent. No other restrictions. As long as you can target it, it’s gone. Again, you may want to target your own permanents with this, but the best use is to pick apart the strengths in your opponents board.

The final ability costs fourteen loyalty counters. This sounds huge but in fact two activations of Karn’s first ability will get you there. This one is big. You restart the game. So each player returns everything to their deck, sets their life total to 20, and draws a new opening hand. You do this too, except that anything exiled by Karn Liberated starts this new game under your control. Usually, there is no coming back from this for your opponents. This ability alone makes Karn Liberated a card all players must pay attention to.

When you restart a multiplayer game, any players previously eliminated do not return to the table, you only start with those players alive when Karn’s ability resolves.

Verdict: Awesome. Karn Liberated is a card that will win any deck the game. It works best in decks that can get the mana to cast him as early as possible, exile some cards, and then activate the third ability. You need to be able to protect Karn for two turns and that’s it.

Connections: Like Karn Liberated? You may also like [Elspeth, Knight-Errant] [Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker] [Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded]
Don’t like Karn Liberated? You may prefer [Sorin Markov] [Gideon Jura] [Elspeth Tirel]

Game of Games at Winter Retreat

A lot of games were played and so a lot of ranks were gained. The 8th level fell to the redoubtable Eddie C, who is now leading the rankings as our first Duke. With a massive 129 points gained over Winter Retreat, Eddie actually increased his lead as no one got more than that!

The updated rankings are based on all game sheets received over Winter Retreat, up to 12.30 on Sunday. Any sheets completed after then will be added to members’ scores after the July club meeting.

If you are a non-member who attended Winter Retreat, your scores on the slips that were completed and handed in have been counted. If you join LXG over the next month or two those scores will be added to the leaderboard. If you’re curious to know how much you got, just ask in the comments section below.

Fifteen club members who attended Winter Retreat this year gained a rank. Some club members actually skipped an entire rank, so great was their haul of points!

Eddie C is now a Duke
Adrian R, David K, and Leanne J reached the rank of Marquis/ Marchioness
Alex D and Keith D are now Counts
Courtney J and Megan B are now at the level of Viscountess
Jason C is now a Baron
Anna S, Ryan S, Ross vS, and Daniel McG are all at the rank of Baronet/ Baronetess
Emily C, Andrew W and Mal O are now at the Knight/Lady level
Kim A is now an Esquire

See all the new rankings on the Game of Games page.

Winter Retreat Over

It’s all over until next year when we do it again. For those who attended Winter Retreat, we hope you had a great time gaming. Please get in touch with the club committee with any comments you have, positive or negative.

A gaming week-end hardly seems like time enough. Lots of games were being played, lots of Game of Games slips filled out. Winter Retreat is a great time to discover a new board game to try out. This year three titles stood out; Kingsburg, a strategy game that was rarely unused in the time we were there. Kingdom Builder, and interesting strategy game based around map control. Also Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards: Duel at Mount Skullzfyre captured imagination with its fast, ruthless and wacky gameplay.

My favourite of the week-end was undoubtedly Finska, a strategy peg and skittles game. This game managed to do what even natural disasters cannot – get large groups of gamers congregating outside! Both tactical and fun, this game is great for gamers of all ages.

I saw numerous cameras around the hall, so expect so more Winter Retreat reports to hit the website soon!

Week-end Reading

The website will be going quiet between now and the end of Winter Retreat. After that, it will be updates galore! To tide you through the gap, here are links to some of our more popular content.

The Planeswalkers in Grand Melee series is garnering plenty of interest. The latest part, part 20, is available now.

Keith Done’s One Gamer’s Diary series is essential reading. Here is a link to Part 1.

Our game reviews are also popular, favourites include our reviews of Deadwood, Mageknight, and Smallworld.

We also do articles on what’s new in the gaming world, including Kickstarter, 3D modelling, and online board games.

LXG was recently on the radio!

Happy reading!

Winter Retreat Guide

Welcome to the Winter Retreat guide for 2012!

When to get there: Arrive after 2.00pm on Friday 22 June.

How to get there: Warwick is 2-2.5 hours drive from Brisbane, along the Cunningham Highway. From Brisbane, get onto the Cunningham Highway, and follow this highway to Warwick. Follow the highway through the town. A short way west of Warwick, turn left onto Leslie Dam Road. Follow this road, it ends at your destination.

You may also like to look up Leslie Dam on google maps, or at the official site. Or click to use our terrible ‘map’

Accommodation: The cabins are each divided into four four-person rooms. Each room has its own toilet and shower, and two bunk beds. Cabins will be allocated prior to arrival (a requirement of the venue), but there is room for change. We will try to allocate people who are in a group to the same room. Cabins are unheated, which leads us to our next point.

What to take: Games, of course! However there are a number of other vital items not to forget such as

    warm clothing
    sleeping bag
    blankets
    toothbrush and toothpaste
    soap and shampoo
    towel
    pillows

The venue does not provide any of these so don’t forget them! If you do forget, there are several shops in Warwick and you wouldn’t be the first to drive into town on Saturday for a towel or pillow!

Food: You are unlikely to need any, check the menu. So you don’t miss any meals, you may like to print the menu out and bring a copy with you.

Games: Games are played in one of two halls. The first hall also doubles as a dining room, so tables there will need to be keep clear for people to eat their four square meals on. Drinks are also provided in this hall, but not in the other hall.

A Game of Games: All games played at Winter Retreat will earn Game of Games points for club members. Slips will be provided. It’s a great way of moving up the ranks!

When to leave: Departure is any time after lunch on Sunday 24 June.

Anything else? Ask!

A Game of Games, June 2012 Update

Another big day for all of our players in A Game of Games, our way to bring the meta to the games we all play at LXG.

The gap in the ranks is gone, with Leanne J achieving the rank of Countess.
Thirteen other club members also gained a rank today:
New Viscount: Adrian R
New Baroness: Megan B
New Baronets: Darren C, Terry K, Nigel B, Lance A
New Knights: Geoff H, Shannon R, Dalton B, David R
New Esquires: Chris V, Tom B, Bruce S

Well done everyone!

For those attending Winter Retreat this year, you will have the chance to get even more Game of Games points. Another update will be posted after Winter Retreat.

Grand Melee League, Round 6 Update

Round 6, the dreaded Planechase round, took place today. There were three tables, with only the first two tables using a shared Planechase deck.

Table 1: This table went to time, with the top ranked players in the league proving themselves much better at defending than at attacking. Only Eddie C managed to get a single kill, and so to him went the spoils and the glow of victory!

Table 2: Jeremy almost won a victory, taking out four opponents with one spell! That really should be an achievement, maybe next year… Jeremy didn’t get the win however, as Megan B took him out to win the game herself. Keith D picked up the other point at that table.

Table 3: A big win for Kaden C in his second melee of the year. Four kills and the win puts him squarely in the top 8 for next month’s round. Chris V picked up his first point of the year at this table of six.

Standings: A fair amount of change in the standings, with Dalton B, Jason C, and Kaden C all re-entering this month. Dalton’s lead at the top has been cut to just one point. Kaden and Dalton enter and re-enter the top 8, while Jacob R and Shannon R drop out. After six rounds, 5 points is enough to see you into the top 8, as long as you have won a melee.

View the latest standings.

June Meeting Preview

This Sunday 17 June is our next club meeting, and it promises to be a busy one!

Calling All Games!: If you have any games with you borrowed from our games library, please return them this month. We want to take as many games as possible to Winter Retreat. Speaking of which…

Winter Retreat Payment: 17 June is the last day you can pay your Winter Retreat fee if you have not already done so. You may wish to confirm that your name is on the list of attendees. If this is your first Winter Retreat, look out for our Winter Retreat Survival Guide, coming next Wednesday.

Melee League Planechase Round: Round 6 is the Planechase Round and you can find the details here.

Games Round Up: Anyone going to Winter Retreat with some space in their car is asked to take along as many games as you can from the club library. See us at the close of the meeting, where we will attempt to empty the shelves.

And More!: The Viewpoint and Thunderstone leagues are still going, plus all the games in our library are there to be played before we pack them up for Winter Retreat. You may even want to bring a radio along!

LXG on the Radio!

ABC Radio National visited us during our April meeting, they recorded interviews with our President Eddie C and Treasurer Keith D, and wandered the tables talking or just listening as we played our games.

The resulting program will be going to air at 11.30am Sunday June 23. Of course this clashes with our June meeting, so ask those you leave at home to record it for you! The ABC website also has a couple of photos they took at the meeting, so check them out here.

The program will be talking about board games and their resurgence in recent years. Other people are interviewed, including the director of ‘Going Cardboard’ a documentary about board games.

Planeswalkers in Grand Melee, part 20: Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas

Tezzeret came out second-best in a duel with Jace Beleren. He has now been rebuilt by Nicol Bolas, and returns as that dragon’s field agent. He is currently on Mirrodin, keeping one eye on the progress of the Phyrexians, but taking no part in the ongoing war.

Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas has an affinity for artifacts, just like his original incarnation. However as a blue/black rather than mono blue planeswalker, this affinity comes through in a different way. Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas costs four mana to cast, including one blue and one black mana. He enters the battlefield with three loyalty counters and has three abilities, all related to artifacts. This means you won’t be using him outside of a blue/black artifact deck. However his abilities are worth the restriction.

The first ability adds one loyalty counter and allows you to look at the top 5 cards of your library, reveal and artifact card to put into your hand, and out the rest on the bottom of your library in any order. A blue ability as far as these things go, but a useful one. Adding a single loyalty counter is all you need to access Tezzeret’s final ability too.

The second ability is useful when you need an attacker out of nowhere. For the cost of one loyalty counter, target artifact becomes a 5/5 artifact creature. Useful if you have an untapped artifact land. It can even be used on an equipment card, but remember that equipment which becomes a creature cannot be attached to a creature. If it was already attached it becomes unattached.

The final ability is great in multiplayer, including in Grand Melee. It costs four loyalty counters, and target player loses x life and you gain x life. X is equal to twice the number of artifacts you control. So if you have two artifact they lose 4 life, if you have three they lose 6 and so on. In the kind of deck you’ll use Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas in you should have nine or ten artifacts before using this ability. The ability can immediately kill an opponent as well as giving you the life to absorb attacks from the player to your right. Artifacts or spells with the proliferate ability become valuable in this deck, as they allow you to quickly restore Tezzeret’s loyalty counters, ready for another strike.

Verdict: Strong. Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas will do well at the magic table with a deck built around him. The card can also be added to some other decks, but works best in a purpose-built deck.

Connections: Like Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas? You may also like [Tezzeret the Seeker] [Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker] [Jace, the Mindsculptor]
Don’t like Tezzeret? You may prefer [Sarkhan the Mad] [Jace, Memory Adept] [Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded]
